The best advice I can give new students is to begin your homework well before its due because most of the time it can take a lot longer than one might think.

Best Web Sites and Stumper Photos

Best Web Sites~
My favorite websites are Ryleigh's, Christian's, Chelsea's, and Madeline's. I liked Ryleigh's because it was nicely laid out. The colors were eye catching and the text was easy to read. I liked Christian's because it was very open and informative. The layout was simple and uncluttered. I liked Chelsea's because of the color contrasts that she used. Her pictures were cute as well. I like Madeline's because her picture collages were really good, all of her pictures were focused as well.

Best Stumper Photos~

My favorite stumper photos are Belen's, Lauren's, Clarissa's and Austin's. I liked Belen's because her web page was nicely laid out and eye grabbing. The photo was beautiful as well. I liked Lauren's because the background colors matched the photo and the photo was very creative. I liked Clarissa's because the angle of the photo was nice and the background color matched the light. I liked Austin's because the clues were helpful and the photo was hard to figure out.

My top three favorite bad PowerPoint presentations:

Belen Vinueza's: She did a really good job of using different animations and pictures on one page to show how crowded and overwhelming it can be. Also, all of her slides were really informative. The ending page was really well done as well.
Chelsea Holmes': I really liked Chelsea's because the theme that she used really draws in the viewers attention. Also, her slides were good in that they talked about what not to do and then the slide was an example of what it said not to do. I think she created a really good bad PowerPoint.
Lauren Omer's:Her PowerPoint was humorous while informative at the same time. She did a good job of showing how pictures can be useless and how they can cover up important text making it unreadable.

In a PowerPoint you should:

Make sure the audience can read the text
Use text colors that stand out
Use pictures as supplements
Put key points on the slides
Use animations when appropriate
Use transitions when appropriate
Use correct spelling and grammar

In a PowerPoint you should not:

Use text colors that blend into the background
Use pictures as backgrounds
Overload pages with animations
Put the entire speech on the slide
Cover the text with pictures
Use small text or unreadable text

The current law of copyright: A work of intellectual property is protected under US copyright laws the moment it is fixed in a tangible form. Therefore, every picture on the Internet is subject to copyright even if it does not have the copyright logo. However, this does not mean that you cannot use photos from the Internet. There are several ways to lawfully use copyrighted photographs:

cite the source
get permission
pay royalty fees
claiming fair use

You do not have to cite your source if you took/created the photograph. Otherwise, you should always cite your source, even if it is fair use and there is no copyright label, just to be safe. This is because fair use can be contested in court. It is subjective and it helps your case if you cite the source. If the image is copyrighted you should ask the photographer/designer for permission to use it. They can either allow you to use it or charge you a small royalty fee. The last option is claiming fair use. There are four criteria that are applied when deciding if the use was fair use:

The nature of the work being produced. Ex: fair use is easier to claim when using an academic journal rather than People Magazine.
Why the work is being produced. Ex: fair use is easier to claim when using a photo for a non profit organization rather than for monetary gain.
The amount that is copied. Ex: fair use is easier to claim if a couple sentences from a book are copied rather than ten pages.
The impact that the reproduction has on the ability of rights holder to profit.( This is what carries the most weight)

Web 2.0

I thought that the Time "Person of the Year" article was correct in identifying the major changes that have occurred on the Internet to create Web 2.0. This article pointed out the positive things that happened during 2006 and credited them to the emergence of Web 2.0. Through Web 2.0, the world is becoming smaller because people are communicating with people from other cities, states and nations through facebook and myspace. Also, Web 2.0 users can get a glimpse of how other people live through YouTube and blogs. The Time article helped me to see how useful all of the web advancements are. They also create a sense of community in a world that is torn apart by difference. Also, I had never heard of the term Web 2.0 to describe the web society we have today until I read this article.

The article I read was "IT Execs Seek New Ways to Justify Web 2.0" by Heather Havenstein from the August 13, 2007 issue of ComputerWorld. This article is about companies using web 2.0 to help produce productivity and gain customers. One pharmaceutical company that is in the process of using Web 2.0 is hoping to improve interactivity and communications within the company, according to the company's director of library and literature, William Hayes. The idea of using blogging and wikis in a setting where medical advances and research are being done is ingenious because the flow of information never stops. People can communicate with each other in different labs instantly.I think that the placement of Web 2.0 in businesses is a great idea because it will improve the rate at which advancements occur, promote productivity and create a closer working environment.

I think that the future of Web 2.0 is full of possibilities. If people continue to use the components of Web 2.0 like YouTube and facebook, the world will continue to shrink. If companies begin to use Web 2.0 in their businesses, the productivity of companies would speed up tremendously and new features would appear as well. However, some downsides could be that people's privacy could be invaded and a company could try to monopolize Web 2.0 and begin to charge money to use it.

My experience with Microsoft Office

I have been using Word to type up word documents for seven years. I can type, import pictures, change fonts, and use word art. However, I have been using primarily macs for the last five years. Therefore, I am more familiar with the older editions of the program. I am somewhat familiar with PowerPoint but I cannot create anything beyond a simple presentation. I have tried to use Excel but I normally become fustrated with it in a matter of minutes. I have never used Outlook, Access and Publisher.

I would like to learn how to use Excel so that I can create charts and spreadsheets for my classes. Also, I would like to improve my PowerPoint skills so that I can create a powerpoint with sounds, pictures and different screen wipes. Another goal of mine would be to learn Word 2007 so that I will be familar with it when it becomes available for macs.

Hi, my name is Flannery Donley but I go by Kate and I am a first year student at Trinity. I am 5 foot 1 and one half inches tall, yes that extra half inch counts. I have lived in Austin,Texas all my life. I have a younger sister whose name is Gracie. I have five fish named Lady Marmalade, Pablo, Gary, Buda, and Eugene. I also have four dogs named Galileo, Daisy, Bailey and Andi. My parents are Aileen Hooks and Ray Donley.

In high school I played soccer and tennis and was a colorguard co-captain. Colorguard is a mixture of spinning flags and rifles and dance. I enjoy baking, singing in my car, dancing, playing tennis, drinking shaken passion iced tea lemonades from Starbucks and reading. My favorite book is Keeping the Moon by Sarah Dessen. I collect rubber ducks as well.

I do not have a lot of previous computer experience. I was in newspaper for 3 years in high school. I used photoshop elements and indesign to lay out pages. I own a Mac but I am also familiar with PCs.
